A high quality of life and all of the features necessary to sustain a progressive community are available in Port Arthur.  The City has a population of approximately 60,000 and is 90 miles east of Houston, Texas.  Port Arthur is served by the Southeast Texas Regional Airport and has excellent bus and highway access.

Coupled with a moderate climate, Lamar State College- Port Arthur, and an excellent public school system, Port Arthur provides an ample opportunity for lifelong learning. 

Port Arthur is a recreational paradise offering movie theaters, hunting, fresh and saltwater fishing as well as beaches and boating activities. The City has over 30 parks, an 18- hole par 72 golf course and Pleasure Island, which is on the shores of Lake Sabine, once a secret anchorage of Pirate Jean Lafitte. Port Arthur also has over 100 churches in every denomination.  The City features numerous restaurants (seafood and Cajun specialties,) several shopping centers and malls, and an array of recreation and fitness centers. The City features many historical sites including Rose Hill Manor, the Vuylsteke Home, the Queen Of Peace Statue and Gardens, Museum of the Gulf Coast, and White Haven.

 

POLICE OFFICER QUALIFICATIONS

  • United States Citizen
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent
        
    However; with a GED, the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education requires a person with a GED to also have 12 semester hours of credit from an accredited college or university with at least a 2.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in order to be admitted to a training facility to become police officer. In other words, with a GED, you must also have 12 hours of college credit with a GPA of 2.0 or higher to attend a police academy to become a police officer in Texas .
  • Valid Texas Drivers License
  • 21 years of age, maximum age of 40.  If you are a certified officer with experience or military service then the maximum age is 45.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of pertinent Federal, State, and local laws and the ability to interpret and apply them.
  • Organization and time management skills
  • Ability to complete firearms certification
  • Skills to resolve situations characterized by conflict and danger.

RESIDENCY INCENTIVE

The City will provide $1,500.00 (subject to applicable taxes) for down payment and closing cost expenses, to those employees who elect to purchase and move into a home in a non-target area of the City.

The City will provide $3000.00 (subject to applicable taxes) for down payment and closing cost expenses, to those employees who elect to purchase and move into a home in a target area of the City.

The City will provide $400.00 in moving cost assistance to employees who elect to move into the City and rent or lease a residence, plus $ 75.00 per month rental assistance for those that rent/ lease in a non-target area of the City, or $ 150.00 per month for those that rent or lease in a target area.

For those employees who own and reside within the City, the City will provide a $75.00 per month housing expense to those who reside in a non-target area and $150.00 per month to those employees who reside in a target area.

Employee moving into the City and receiving monies for either down payment and closing cost expenses, or moving cost assistance as delineated above who move out of the City within three (3) years of receipt will be required to pay back to the City a pro rata share of the amount received.
